I recently had a discussion with a friend of mine who also studies philosophy. We foolishly tried to define what art is. After much back and forth, he made an interesting statement: “All art is beautiful”. The conclusion was drawn from the following argument: All art is beautiful, and that which isn’t beautiful is ugly. But art that shows something ugly, often also shows the so-called “ugly truth”. But then again, the truth is always beautiful in it’s ability of being truthful. What do you guys think? I believe there is a lot of truth to this argument.
This picture is of the German officer Goebbels, and propaganda minister in Nazi Germany. This picture captured the moment that he discovers that the photographer is himself jewish. I believe that this photograph actually is called “eyes of hate”. In a sense it is a horrible and ugly picture, but in the horror perhaps one can find the beauty of truth seeping through his eyes.
